In 1685 in the midst of what is known as ‘the Killing Times’, 167 Covenanters were imprisoned in what is known as the Whig’s Vault at the far end of the castle. Dunnottar Castle was the home of the Earls Marischal of Scotland, who oversaw all ceremonial activities in the Scottish Court, including the coronations.

Visited Dunnottar Castle the week when the Beast from the East was due. Free parking and grabbed a quick cup of coffee at the catering van before we made out way down to the castle. Walked down the steps and then paid our £7 each to get in. A really interesting place and very well maintained.

The car park at Dunnottar is small for the number of people visiting us each year so please share cars and transport wherever possible. Dogs are welcome at the Castle as long as they are kept on a lead at all times. There are some steep drops from the cliffs and we wouldn’t want to lose any dogs over the side!
